Certifications and Entities

ECOCERT COSMOS NATURAL: All ingredients are of natural origin, except for a restricted list of approved ingredients (including preservatives) allowed in small quantities. On average, Ecocert certified products contain 99% natural origin ingredients.

ECOCERT COSMOS ORGANIC: At least 95% of the plant-based ingredients must be organic, and a minimum of 20% of the total product must be organic. As an exception, for rinse-off products, non-emulsified aqueous products, and products containing at least 80% minerals or mineral-origin ingredients, a minimum of 10% of the total product must be organic.

Note: Water or minerals are not considered "organic" as they do not come from agriculture. As water is a major component in cosmetic formulas, it dilutes the proportion of organic ingredients in the overall product. Therefore, a massage oil that doesn't contain water may display up to 100% organic ingredients.

The Vegan Society Trademark: The Vegan Trademark is an internationally recognised vegan product certification, established in 1990 by The Vegan Society, and has been helping make vegan products more accessible ever since. Registration with the trademark gives brands the confidence to shout about their vegan credentials. 

GMP: Good manufacturing practice (GMP) describes the minimum standard that  manufacturers must meet in their production processes. It consists of guidelines that define management and handling actions, with the purpose of ensuring favourable conditions for the production of safe products. They are also useful for the design and operation of establishments and for the development of processes.

ISO 24444 tests: the European Committee for Standardization (CEN) elaborated the ISO standard 24444, which describes an in vivo testing method for the determination of sun protection factor (SPF/UVB) of sunscreen products.

ISO 24443 tests: Specifies an in vitro procedure to characterize the UVA protection of sunscreen products. Specifications are given to enable determination of the spectral absorbance characteristics of UVA protection in a reproducible manner (Critical Wave Length testing):

COLIPA: The association has had its fair share of putting sanity in the cosmetics industry in Europe. The association has come up with guidelines that each stakeholder must conform to in order to run in the industry. For example, the association has developed an ingredient threshold requirement that every manufacturer must meet to be deemed as fit for human use. Additionally, it has provided for vital information which is placed on the label so as to give information about the product they use and establish its legality.

Nature & Progres: The specifications of the Nature et Progrès label are very strict: for a product to be labeled, it requires that 100% of the ingredients come from organic farming and that a minimum of 70% of the brand's ranges be labeled. Nature and Progress.

FSC: It stands for Forest Stewardship Council, which is an international non-profit organisation founded in 1993 with a mission to create responsible forestry, meaning  it certifies forests to ensure their environments are responsibly managed and meet the highest environmental and social standards. It is the only forest verification scheme endorsed by leading environmental charities like WWF, the Woodland Trust and Greenpeace.
