Switchel Recipe - Homemade Electrolyte Drink

Posted by KND VLC on

Have you heard about switchel?

This beverage, made with apple cider vinegar, ginger, lemon, and honey, became popular in the 17th century. Nowadays, it's making a comeback.

In theory, it was created to keep farmers well-hydrated during the summer months when water was scarce and often contaminated. Unlike other fermented beverages, its fermentation process isn't lengthy.

How to Prepare it?

- 2 to 3-inch piece of fresh ginger.

- 1/2 cup of apple cider vinegar.

- Juice of 1 lemon.

- 2 cup of honey.

- 2 and 1/4 cups of water with or without carbonation.

Step by Step To make this recipe, start by preparing the ginger.

Place it in a saucepan with water and let it boil for 5 minutes. After this time, remove from heat and let it rest for 10 minutes.

In a glass container with a lid, mix the honey with the vinegar.

Now, add the water with ginger and lemon juice.

Cover the container and shake for a few minutes to ensure the ingredients are well mixed. Finally, when the drink reaches room temperature, place the jar in the refrigerator and let it cool.

At this point, it's ready to be enjoyed. Keep in mind that the longer the switchel rests, the stronger the ginger flavor will be. So, if you like it spicier, let it rest for several days. You can store switchel in the refrigerator for up to 7 days and drink it whenever you want.

What are the potential benefits of Switchel?

Switchel could be an alternative to coffee or sports drinks. Nowadays, it's offered as a source of antioxidants, vitamins, minerals, and digestive enzymes due to its components.

Beyond this, it's said that consuming it may have several potential health benefits. Among them, the following can be mentioned:

  1. Pain and inflammation: Ginger contains compounds with anti-inflammatory properties. That's why it's believed that this beverage contributes to controlling inflammation and its complications. Likewise, studies suggest that this spice is a stimulant in gastrointestinal disorders, rheumatism, and osteoarthritis.

  2. Immune system: On the other hand, lemon juice, which contains vitamin C, helps strengthen the immune system. Thus, it helps prevent common problems like colds. It seems to boost defenses and energy levels.

  3. Glucose levels: Regarding this issue, the scientific article "Diabetes: Nutritional Treatment" states that consuming 30 milliliters of vinegar allows a decrease in postprandial glucose. In other words, this study explains that vinegar reduces blood sugar levels after meals and, in turn, induces a feeling of satiety.

However, it should be clear that vinegar alone cannot achieve a decrease in glucose, nor does it have magical properties.

  1. Electrolyte replenishment: Lemon juice and ginger, besides giving a refreshing flavor to the drink, contain sodium and potassium. These minerals serve to replenish electrolytes lost on a hot day or after a workout session.

It's important to note that while switchel may offer these potential health benefits, its consumption should be part of a balanced and healthy diet. Additionally, it's advisable to consult with a healthcare professional before making significant changes to your diet, especially for those with pre-existing medical conditions or who are taking medications.
